Travertine - composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), and therefore, also technically a carbonate rock; travertine forms in caves and around hot springs. When the groundwaters that contain calcium bicarbonate, rich in minerals and hot under hydrostatic pressure exposed to surface through a fracture or reach to a cavity like cave, they loose pressure on them. The dissolved CO2 in these waters is released to the atmosphere--as a shaken can of soda fizzes when opened-- and precipitating solid calcite, thus travertine forms. Travertine can be thought as a kind of marble, except it is filled with "holes" which generated by the gases get trapped in stone during its formation.
Travertine is generally thought to be more porous and not suitable for residential use. On the other hand, travertine flooring is a type of stone flooring and it is one of the most popular stone flooring types. Travertine is well liked for its unique look that comes mostly from how it was formed.
The most asked question from our customers and the visitors of this web site is which one is better? Honed or Polished? As a manufacturer and a supplier its our responsibility to answer. Many suppliers don’t think much about their products which they had sold. How is it look or is there something wrong with it when it is installed. We hope this information can be useful to make a decision.
There are two factors which effects the choice of the finish type; look and suitability. First of all it is very important where you install your tile. Then, of course comes its view.
As mentioned in this site several times, a honed tile is half polished. It has a matte look and when you touch its surface you don’t feel any roughness, it’s smooth. You can use this kind of tile in everywhere, walls and floors of kitchens, bathrooms and etc. And don’t need to worry about slipperiness. It is really easy to clean and protect your honed tiles.
Most of the people prefers a shiny and modern look in their house. They choose polished travertine tiles and never mind the slippery ground. A polished tile is going to be slippery when it gets wet. That is why we don’t recommend polished kind for especially bathroom floors and around the pools. You can use it everywhere except these places. But also, i know some people who uses polished tiles in their bathroom and don’t complain about slippery grounds.
Tumbled tiles are aged natural travertine. Has rounded edges as a pebble transporting by the sea and river for years having a roundness. Today by the help of the machines and for a short time the same aged look can be provided.
The given athmosphere to your home is really fabulous. The ones who have ever been to historical places surely felt the mystic air of the old looking buildings and Turkish baths. May be you didn’t looked at so carefully but when you entered inside, you covered by a different athmosphere. The taken from the tiles by the time – actually it is not taken, given beauty – now you can give to your home as tumbled travertine tiles. Slightly rounded edges, soften natural looking holes and matte and smooth surface.
Brushed travertine in other words patinato travertine tiles, looks like a cheese with holes. Of course its’ holes are not seem so sharp, they are softened because of the brushed surface. Also its’ surface extremely soft and when you touch it you feel its wavy surface like at seas.
This effect of brush on the surface provides a different style to travertine tile. After breaking the edges brushing the tiles, reduces the sharpness of the chipped edges and mostly preferred. A chipped edged french pattern set on the floor of your home and you walking barefoot on it …..Choice is yours …
Using a sealer changes the tumbled travertine tiles' look making its natural colour visible, as in the example photo below:
